Women in Music Videos

For my final project, I chose how women are portrayed in music videos. Ever since music videos started, women have been portrayed as a sexual image instead as and actual women. Producers and artists have used women to sell their music. When it comes to women who are singing, they use their sexuality to try and portray a message and bring in the male audience. Women lose their sense of womanhood and are seen for just their sexuality. When it comes to female singers, they could have a beautiful voice, but they are seen as nothing unless they are sexual and show some skin. It is taking away from their talent and is only focusing on what they male population wants to see. It shows how women are here to please males only when in all actuality we are just as equal as men are and we should get the respect we deserve.
This clip is from a video called Dream Worlds 3 and it is very disturbing so please know that before watching.

This video shows how in music videos they make it seem its okay to treat women with disrespect and treat them like items not real humans, but when this happens in real life it is not okay and can make a women very upset and uncomfortable.

In the blog I found she doesn't just focus on music videos, but it shows how women are portrayed in all forms of media which I really liked. Yes, women are seen in a very negative light in music videos, but in all media women are seen as very sexual and skinny women. In magazines there are more stories and articles the focus on what to wear, or how to be sexy, or how to keep a boyfriend, then on true life stories that show real women. I think that it should be the opposite, it is these real life stories that girls should be reading. When girls see articles about how to look or how to be the "IT" girl they get the idea that this is the norm and this is what they should look like when in all reality that isn't what real girls look like. When looking through a magazine or watching television people see these extremely skinny and very sexual girls and it is delivering the message to all women young and old that this is what they should look like and this is what they should strive to be. The media shows these women as items that do not portray them in real life situations. They make it seem alright to be extremely skinny or allow men to walk all over them. This is not what the real world is like and it needs to be made more clear that the way these women are treated in music videos is not alright and women should not have to sell themselves to make money. I agree with everything that was stated on this blog, women need to be portrayed in a more realistic light in the media. It is sending a message to the world that is not appropriate nor is it right to treat women like this or have men think that women are just an item that they can control. We are not here for the sole purpose of men, we are just as equal and capable of doing anything that a man can do. The media needs to start portraying women in a realistic light and allow them to really be who they want to be and not what people think will sell their product.(http://darlinggender.blogspot.com/)
